Intro #
If I had to guess, GOTYE sky-rocketed to stardom after he released a duet he performed with Kimbra that was titled “Someone That I Used to Know”. Since then I found that I am a fan of two of his albums and one really good song is this one, “Hearts A Mess”.
A Personal Tale - Without the details :-) #
In another lifetime, I grew to have feelings for a close friend. They never grew out of control or any such nonsense. This friend was someone amazing that I could truly admire.
However, it’s an odd thing to look upon another and see that they are locked in internal turmoil. It was an intuition, but it was strong and it was there. The more I live my life the more I realize I should trust my intuitions. It has been right more than wrong and has led me to live some great adventures.
How could it be that I’d recognize the inner turmoil in someone else? I believe it’s because I myself had experienced a serious inner doubt by that time in my life and was able to recognize it out in the wild in another.
One day many years later this song came to my ears and it encapsulated that experience of looking upon someone and thinking to myself “your heart is a mess and I know you won’t admit to it. If I were in your same position, I might not admit it either. Even so, I would like it if you would let me in.”
When another’s heart is closed off and one has already stated they would like to be let in…there is precious little one can do if that other person chooses to leave up the barricade.
And so, I would alter the last line of the song with one word and say:
Love ain’t safe, you won’t get hurt if you stay away
So you can wait, but I don’t wanna waste my love
What a mess? #
How much of a mess have I been?
How much of a mess might I still be?
Likely a soul or two along the way could have sung this to me.
I’ll clean myself up the way I wipe the clouds from the sky on a cloudy day to make it sunny.

I’ve become better at it now as an adult, but when I was younger I’d often let another fill spaces in my mind even though I knew I took up less space or no space in theirs. Things are a little different now.
Coincidentally, this is a common thing and I’ve heard others talk about doing the same thing; they fantasize about someone and construct an idea of who they are in their mind only to find out later that the person in real life is nowhere near what they had imagined.
It makes no sense, but I’m desperate to connect
It doesn’t make any sense that I, a guy that is supposed to be a bold, fearless, successful, ambitious, and driven man would want to connect. But so it is that that is how I am and that I want a connection beyond the realm of space and time.

If I had understood this lesson earlier in life then maybe I would be sailing my ship in waters very different from the ones I find myself in now. I might not have moored myself in certain locations as long as I did. Maybe I was moored as long as I needed to be, and I am where I was always to be.
In the future I will try to not waste my love more than necessary. If someone does not wish for it, then it shall not be granted.
